When asked what people can do to move forward to better, a number of experts and leaders say: “We need to talk with one another about what matters.” I always want to answer back to the screen or radio: “That’s exactly what we’re doing in the Power Peers Network.”
Our conversations in the Power Peers Network celebrate the human spirit. They support each of us as we strive to be better human beings. It is a forum to explore the heroic nature of who we truly are.
In our daily lives, we talk with people for whom we have varying degrees of affection – either in person sitting six feet apart, via video calls, or on the phone. Warm conversations and reciprocal, caring relationships are integral components of being truly alive. We need to purposefully cultivate and cherish these in this climate of social distance.
It is incredibly rewarding to hear how Network participants have benefited from the video-conference calls focused each week on one value, idea or principle. A comment often repeated is “I never thought about it like that before.”
Being heard and listening with respect are rare and wonderful experiences for the participants. One member said: “The topics help me check in on what I think about this and clarify how I express it.”
Take one minute right now to ponder – I mean really take the time to consider:
How would you feel if someone listened to you without judgment, with respect, and seeking to understand your point-of-view?
How would you feel if you had the safe space and time to explore how you thought and felt about values and ideals? If you could speak from your heart – honestly – about something that matters to you – without knee-jerk responses or judgment?
Really! It’s pretty darn powerful and satisfying.
Power Peers conversations are anchored in the guidelines and process of the Conversation Café organization, which are available for anyone to use formally as a Conversation Café or informally in personal and business interactions. I found them in 2002 and have used them with great results in business and community groups.
I invite each of you to attend a Power Peers call as a guest to experience the freedom and satisfaction of talking about ideas of substance with other decent, caring people. Contact me and we will schedule the visit.
As a New Year gift for you to use in your gatherings – online and in-person – you can download PDF files of the Conversation Café Agreements and a tent card with the Agreements that you can place on a table for all to see as you meet. Here are the links:
As we move forward into 2021, may we find our way to come together in peace and understanding. Accepting one another as we are and trusting the good within us to come through as we create new ways to be in a changed world.
Thanks for participating in the conversation and all the best, Laura
